OUR COMMITTMENT

We are proud to be part of the NZ Tourism Sustainability Commitment. Click on the logo to the left for more details on what this involves.

Our team is encouraged to identify ways in which we can all contribute to this goal. Our current operational practices include:

Minimising Waste

  • Reducing the use of and non-sustainable materials

  • Reducing Energy consumption

  • All landfill rubbish is recycled

We work closely with North Waste for all of our non organic waste requirements:

  • North Waste are leading initiatives in wood waste to biofuel to reduce CO2 emissions and divert wood waste away from landfill.

  • North Waste are proactive in the extensive recovery of green waste collections, turning this product into valuable compost for sale back to the community.

  • North Waste is on the cutting end in the development of ‘Pay as you throw’ technology. We are working in partnership with councils across NZ to minimise waste to landfill. Their solution makes it easy for customers to track and be accountable for the waste they generate. This technology will significantly reduce kerbside waste to landfill by providing a direct economic incentive to minimise waste.

  • North Waste specialise in consolidation and processing of bulk recycling across a network of resource recovery operations to support our communities access to recycling in partnership with councils.

The Woodhouse Lodge herb & vegetable garden

We have started growing a lot of our herbs and small vegetables in the gardens behind the kitchen. This is supplemented by the Lodge owners who grow the majority of our herbs on their local property.

native planting for regeneration

When the decision to build shelter belts across the top of the property – it seemed sensible to invest in native regeneration to provide these belts. Now there are a number of shelter belts in growth across the top of the property to assist with wind shelter as well as to eventually provide privacy between the accommodation units. The native birds are also happy!

Guest Room & Lodge amenities

Tissues and toiletetries are all 6 for good which gives a contribution to 6 children’s charities for all purchases made

Woodhouse Lodge supports the ‘Six for Food’ brand, an NZ brand that is paraben free, sulphate free and cruelty free as well as supporting 6 amazing New Zealand kids charities.

Energy Reduction

Since taking over operations of the Lodge, we have actively terminated electricity to areas of the property that do not require 24/7 electricity. A replacement programme to replace all lightbulbs with LED  bulbs is underway and where replacement equipment is needed, low energy usage items are purchased as replacements.

the tiaki promise

At Woodhouse Lodge we have taken the commitment to support the Tiaki Promise.

Tiaki means to care for people and place. New Zealand is precious, and everyone who lives and travels here has a responsibility to look after it. The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now and for future generations. By following the Tiaki Promise, we are making a commitment to New Zealand. To act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home”.

We encourage our guests and suppliers to join us in making this commitment.
